Japan boasts stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity. There are many national parks that offer wildlife fans a chance to experience the unique flora and fauna. Here are must-visit national parks in Japan that will certainly please nature lovers. 

Shiretoko National Park [UNESCO]

Shiretoko National Park lies on the north-eastern tip of Hokkaido. It is one of the top Japan national parks boasting breath-taking scenery with dramatic cliffs, lush forest and plenty of wildlife. You will get a chance to experience the rich marine life in Shiretoko. The waters around the peninsula are jammed with seals, sea lions and what, so is a great spot for boat tours. On the land, you will see the brown bear, deer, foxes and lots of birds including the majestic Steller’s sea eagle. 

In spring and autumn, the park looks beautiful as the flowers are blooming or adorned with vibrant fall colors. A hiking trail across the park allows you to experience the enchanting landscapes and wildlife closely. 

Kushiro Shitsugen National Park

Khushiro is Japans largest wetland area and a biodiversity hotspot teeming with life. It is a haven for birdwatchers as there are numerous birds to capture in their camera. The Japanese Crane [Grus Japonensis] is the most iconic resident, which can be seen dancing gracefully during courtship displays. 

The park is also a home to diverse range of mammals including the elusive Asian black bear and the Japanese black bear. You can explore the wetlands by boat or walk the scenic trails and soak the serene landscape beauty, while observing this rich wildlife. During sunrise and sunset, the marshes look stunning, creating a magical experience for all nature lovers.

Nikko National Park

Nikko National Park is located on the north of Tokyo. It combines stunning natural beauty with cultural heritage. You will witness its sacred sites including the ornate Toshogu Shrine surrounded by ancient cedar trees. However, its wildlife is genuinely captivating. You can see the Japanese Macaque lounging on rocks or looking for food. Japanese Serow [a goat-antelope] is an elusive refuge. Birdwatchers will delightfully capture numerous bird species like the colourful Japanese tit and powerful mountain hawk-eagle. 

The park features mountainous terrain dotted with hot springs and waterfalls. At Lake Chuzenji, you can enjoy boat rides watching ducks or herons along the shores. 

Yakushima National Park [UNESCO]

The national park has cedar trees called Yakushima – some are estimated to be more than 1,000 years old. Yakushima Island is steeped in biodiversity, which is not found anywhere, so the experience is enchanting. It is a UNESCO heritage site with lush subtropical rainforests teeming ith unique wildlife like the Yakushima macaques and the endangered loggerhead turtles nesting on the sandy beaches nearby.

Okinawa Kaigan National Park

Okinawa Kaigan National Park is located off the southern coastlines. It encompasses coral reefs and rich colourful fishes alongside pristine beaches ideal for snorkelling adventures. It not only home to vibrant marine life but also has terrestrial creatures like the Okinawa rail birds found solely here. You can enjoy the winding pathways through mangroves, where crabs scuttle around the tidal pools brimming with life.
